Chapter 3 presents the tutoring session as a complex social situation with multiple stages. Take a look at the scenarios presented on pages 33-38, choose one, and explain what you would do and say during the "Setting the Agenda" phase of a tutoring session with the student in the scenario you chose.
Scenario 12: Entomology student
ReplyDeleteI would first talk to the student and ask what assignment they were working on. After finding out that it was an entomology essay on how climate affects insect population, I'd ask them a few more questions about the particular topic they're interested in to get an idea of what to look for in their paper. I'd then explain that it would be best to look at the content of the essay first to make sure that it adequately explains climate's influence on insects. Then I'd say that once we've discussed content issues we could look at the list of grammatical/formatting requirements for the essay. I wouldn't correct the punctuation or misspellings, but point out a couple mistakes and then highlight the areas that the student might want to focus on in proofreading. I'd give them a link to the Purdue OWL also so that they can check up on any of the grammar/punctuation rules as they edit and proofread.
